18 What size data sets can Rapidform XOR/Redesign handle?
The processing capability is limited to the user’s PC, but realistic performance expectations would recommend that file sizes be within 1 to 3 million polygons.
17 Is Rapidform XOR/Redesign a replacement for my current CAD package?
XOR is a scan data processing software solution designed to create useful data in the form of high quality mesh models, high quality NURBS surfaces and parametric CAD models from 3D scan data. In order to provide users with the tools to go from 3D scan data to CAD models, XOR contains a full scale of CAD modeling features as well as number of common CAD operations that include 2D and 3D sketch tools. The tools that XOR does not possess are 2D drafting, assembly modeling, CAM and simulations. You would need to continue to use your existing CAD application to fulfill these requirements.
16 Can the feature modeling history in Rapidform XOR/Redesign be transferred to other CAD systems?
Yes. It is called liveTransfer(TM). The liveTransfer of XOR contains an add-on that allows users to automatically regenerate the modeling features in SolidWorks, UG NX and Pro/E Wildfire.
15 Can Rapidform XOR/Redesign read the modeling history from other CAD systems?
XOR will not be able to read the modeling history of parts designed in other CAD systems. XOR will be able to read all neutral file formats such as IGES, STEP, Parasolid and VDAFS. While there are plans to develop the capability to read native CAD formats, models designed in other CAD systems can be imported into rapidformXO Redesign but will only be represented as B-rep models with no history information.
14 Is Rapidform XOR/Redesign a Class-A surfacer?
The solid and surface modeling features in XOR wholly support controlling parameters to design smooth and aesthetically freeform shapes. Users maintain full control of tangent continuity (G2) at all times and also possess features for supporting curvature continuity (G2). XOR is not the appropriate tool for those users that require extremely high quality surface higher than G3 continuity constraints.
13 How can I model a part that contains highly freeform features?
In addition to its CAD redesigning tools, Rapidform XOR/Redesign and XOS/Scan also possess a one-button mesh-to-surface conversion tools that will create a NURBS surface model that will generate an exact representation of a mesh model. By using both the CAD modeling and surfacing tools in Rapidform XOR/Redesign, users will be able to create parametric CAD models of parts that contain both prismatic and freeform features.
12 How can I refit my existing CAD model to match the scan data of the manufactured part?
The first step is to import the CAD model and align the scan data to it. Once the two geometries have been aligned, the user can delete the CAD surfaces that do not match the scan data and replace them with surfaces to match the mesh model of the part.
11 Will Rapidform XOR/Redesign and XOS/Scan yield bigger deviations from the original mesh data?
There are two ways of reverse engineering a part that depend on the requirements of the user. The best way to get an exact representation of a scanned part is to shrink wrap the mesh model with a NURBS surface. This will generate the least amount of deviation from the scan data of a part while providing the most accurate representation of the model.

Building a parametric CAD model from scan data will inherently create deviations between the model in XOR and the scan data. XOR provides a set of smart tools to identify the best design parameters which lead the least deviation error. In addition to these tools, Rapidform XOR/Redesign and XOS/Scan offer the Accuracy Analyzer which provides real time deviation analyses that will ensure users will redesign the model from 3D scan data within the allowable tolerances defined by the user.
10 How can I define a coordinate system to reorient the scan data in Rapidform XOR/Redesign?
Rapidform XOR/Redesign provides a tool that intelligently identifies coordinate systems in order of the likelihood that the original designer had used. The user can choose a recommended coordinate system, or the user also has the option of manually determining the coordinate system that is believed to be the most appropriate for the part by using an intuitive coordinate system setup tool.
9 How simple is it to clean up defective scan data?
Rapidform XOR/Redesign and XOS/Scan provide a comprehensive set of high performance tools that guide the user through the process of identifying and cleaning the defects in the scan data.

One of the greatest time saving features in Rapidform XOR/Redesign and XOS/Scan is the innovative design process that removes the need to clean the scan data of a part. Users can create a parametric CAD model from imperfect or incomplete scan data as long as there is enough data to recognize design parameters.
